RESERVE UNIT

In the early days of the Office of Sheriff, the Sheriff was the lone law enforcement officer covering large areas of land alone or perhaps with one deputy. In those days the Sheriff depended on his ability to gather posse's of concerned citizens to assist him in his duties.

Today's Posse- The Belmont County Sheriff's Office Reserve Deputy Unit consists of 42 Ohio Peace Officer Training Council-certified Deputies who serve voluntarily in service to the Sheriff's Office. The Reserve Deputy Unit is supervised by 2 Reserve Captains and 2 reserve detectives who are responsible for scheduling of reserve personnel. The reserve deputy is subject to the same qualification and re-certification requirements as a full-time deputy, and each serves a required sixteen (16) hours per month in the official capacities as reserve deputies, assisting the full-time deputies as needed. The two (2) Reserve Detectives are assigned to the Criminal Investigation Unit, where they assist in all aspects of the units operations.

Many of the reserve deputies are also members of Specialty Units within the office such as the Mounted Patrol Division, Special Operations Team, Canine Unit. The reserve deputies can be found assisting in all areas of the day to day operation of the Sheriff's Office from transporting prisoners to providing security in high profile cases. The reserve deputies can also be found staffing the Belmont County Sheriff's Office- Ohio Valley Mall Substation and the Mall road retail areas on a regular basis, and as a unit regularly volunteers over 6,000 hours of their time to the citizens of Belmont county each year.
